Today, healthcare organizations face a myriad of challenges in providing safe care, optimizing quality, and preventing patient harm. Patient Safety has emerged as a new discipline which involves assessing risks; conducting periodic compliance audits; developing policies, procedures, guidelines and practices; investigating and analyzing events that cause or could cause harm to patients; and creating a culture of learning and improvement to prevent reoccurrence. To strike a balance between lessons learned from past events and those that may occur in the future, equal emphasis on proactive and reactive approaches becomes essential.

Healthcare organizations can improve their patient safety program with streamlined approach towards quality management, which can be attained by standardizing procedures, eliminating complex steps through process redesign, embarking on culture of safety, and enhancing the outcome with appropriate technology.
